Easiest Container Garden Ever - For Under $10!
By Tom Verde
If you'd like to try your hand and growing some fresh vegetables, but don't want to spend a lot of money or time - or effort, here's an easy way to get started for under $10. Here's what you'll need and the average prices: 1) 40lb bag of potting or topsoil: $3-$6. 2) 1 or 2 small plants depending on type: $1.89 - $3.78. That's it. Really! Ok, so you're probably wondering, where's the container? Where's all the gardening tools? Remember, I said this was easy, right? The bag of potting soil is your container. Here's what you need to do: Find a place for your garden, someplace sunny. The bag will be on the ground for the season, so any grass underneath will die, so choose carefully. Poke some holes in the bag with a trowel, stick, scissors, knife, whatever. This will be the bottom of your container and you want the holes for water to drain out of the bag. You don't want a bag of mud. Now, flip the bag over so that the holes are downward. Now if you're using 2 plants cut two holes 6 inches from the corners of the bag, about 4 inches across. Plant your plants in these two holes, then cut a hole in the middle bag and scoop out a handful of soil. You can water your plants through the middle hole. If you're planting one plant cut a 3 inch hole in the middle and plant your plant in that hole. That's it. All you need to do now is keep your plants watered, give them about 2 cups of water every day or two, maybe a little more if you live in a really hot dry climate. Here's an idea of some plants that work well for this type of container garden, be sure to check and see seasonal planting information for your area. - 2 tomato plants, tomatoes are perfect for this method. - 2 pepper plants, peppers also work really well. - 1 eggplant, very drought and heat tolerant, hard to kill. - 2 bean plants, you won't get a huge crop with 2 plants, you'll probably need 3 bags for a total of 6 plants. - 2 broccoli plants, 2 plants will make enough for 2 people, after the first crop the successive heads are smaller. Crops like corn won't work so well, large vines like gourds, watermelons, squash etc, also don't work as well, and the vines will take over your yard. You can also plant smaller leafy crops like lettuce, cabbage, etc, you can use 6 plants to the bag. So give it a try, you'll be amazed at how good your vegetables taste, and it's the easiest way to garden. |
