49cc Gas Scooters
By Chris Lynn
If you're considering getting a scooter give some thought to how legal it is in your area. Some states and municipalities consider certain scooters to be motorcycles and they must be licensed accordingly. A way to avoid this in many states is with a 49cc scooter. 49cc stands for the displacement of the engine in cubic centimeters. In simple terms it means the total volume of the engine's cylinders. It's a general indicator of engine power. Engine Size and State Licensing So why is a 49cc engine a way for you to avoid a lot of hassle? Because in most states the engine size cutoff between licensing and not licensing is 50cc. In many states (check your states Department of Transportation) a scooter 50cc and over must be titled and you must have a license to operate it whether on the street or not. A 49cc scooter is for all intents and purposes just as powerful as a 50cc scooter but escapes the licensing requirements. You state may have other licensing/titling laws in place, as well as requirements for safety equipment. DMV.org is a good place to find general road requirements for different states, it is a private website, not run by any state government, so don't take it as the last word. It is up to you to check and see what the regulations are in your state or municipality. |
